Childhood - Part 1

21st April, 2020
Day 1

Good morning gentlemen!

With a week passed by, I hope many of you must have become comfortable learning through this digital medium of teaching. Life is such, we should take it as it comes.
We are already through with one chapter from your content and I hope that you all must have understood the chapter well.

This week, we are going to start a new poem named 'Childhood' written by Markus Natten.

In this poem, the poet thinks over his lost childhood. He wonders about the moment where he lost the innocence and realized that the world is not what he seemed it to be. He recalls when his thoughts changed and he realized the hypocrisy of the people around him.He finally settled down to the idea that his childhood went to some forgotten place and is hidden in the face of an innocent infant.

Before comprehending the poem, let us know something about the poet Markus Natten.

 Markus Natten

Let us first understand the learning objectives of this poem.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this poem, the students will be able to

Ø  understand, enjoy and appreciate different genre of English writings
Ø  know about the poet and his contributions
Ø  enhance vocabulary
Ø  have better understanding of rhyme scheme and other poetic devices
Ø  know that Childhood is a bliss
Ø  think when and where has the childhood gone
Ø  know how childhood is innocence while maturity leads to individuality, rationalism  and gaining understanding of hypocrisy

Take few minutes to give a silent reading to this poem and analyse the poem.

Today, we will deal with ONLY TWO stanzas of this poem.

Paraphrasing

When did my childhood go?
Was it the day I ceased to be eleven,
Was it the time I realised that Hell and Heaven,
Could not be found in Geography,
And therefore could not be,
Was that the day!

Word - Meaning

1) Ceased – come to an end

The poet wonders when he lost his childhood. He muses that perhaps it was the day he realised that the concepts of Heaven and Hell, he had been taught of since his youngest years, had no standing in the light of the day. Geography textbooks did not give the location of any such place. Education made the poet question his faith and look at the world much more rationally. The poet realises that he might have lost his childhood when he gained this rational outlook.

When did my childhood go?
Was it the time I realised that adults were not
all they seemed to be,
They talked of love and preached of love,
But did not act so lovingly,
Was that the day!

Word - Meaning
1) Preached – talked or spoken

In the second stanza, the poet recalls the time when he realised that the adults around him did not practice what they preached. They told the poet to be loving and caring, however, they were themselves argumentative, violent and discourteous. Their behaviour was a far cry from the love they sermonized about and advocated so reverently to the child.
Thus, the child lost his faith in the adults around him, whom he had so far, trusted without question. Their latent hypocrisy became evident to the growing child. Perhaps, says Natten, that broken trust was one of the major steps towards adulthood.

You can copy the paraphrasing along with question answers given above in your English registers. We will comprehend the next two stanzas in tomorrow's blog. Also, the poetic devices used will be given to you in tomorrow's blog.

Do not forget to drop in your queries in the comment section. Having doubts mean you are learning.

To get your today's attendance, write any one memory of your childhood in the comment box.

Till then

Be safe

Stay home

God bless you all!

here is an anecdote from my childhood.
Me and my friends used to play cricket in the evening.
many a times our cricket ball would land up in uncle rajiv's house.
he returned the ball for the first few days but eventually he got irritated and kept the ball with him and refused to return it.
however, his dad, Mr. Suresh would always return the ball even if rajiv uncle refused to do so.
this is a mindful memory from my childhood

I remember that when I was in the 5th grade, one time my parents woke me up in the morning as they always did. I asked them, “can I skip school today?“ (this question was probably asked quite often by plenty of children). My father responded: ”Of course you can, if you get up, get dressed and make your bed quickly enough." I credulously believed him, and did everything as fast and efficiently as I could...And then I learned that it was April Fools Day, and I had just 30 more minutes before I had to go to school.

I used to spend every summer back in my hometown, Dehradun, at my Grandpa's house. Behind his house about 10 meters away was a small stream of water. Even though it was very clear that it couldn't had any life in it. Me and my friends were convinced. We used go there every day with a fish net and sit there for hours in hopes to catch something. When we grew older, we finally concluded that there wasn't anything in the river and stopped going there.

Since childhood I was a huge fan of power rangers(which was a common sitcom for the children those days).I used to eagerly wait for the t.v. show to start at 9:00 p.m. but there was sound of giggling from the back when the show started. It was my sister who used to laugh at me for being a die hard fan of such a 'stupid thing"-as she used to consider it. A couple of days back when I accidentally clicked on the cartoon channel, the power rangers show started ....I watched it for a few seconds and realised what a COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME it was.

Since childhood I was a die hard fan of 'Tom and Jerry'. I used to sit in front of the television and watch for hours. No one could understand the joy I got from watching this popular cartoon. One day, while watching 'Tom and Jerry', I saw tom playing the piano. I don't know what came in the mind of that 4 year old kid and soon I developed a strong desire to play the piano. At present, I have cleared my Grade 7 in Piano with Distinction from ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, London) by scoring the highest marks in North India.
'Tom and Jerry' had helped me to discover a true pianist out of myself.

When I was a child, I was often sent to the store to buy things. I’d always forget to buy something, and would be sent back to the store again. I wanted to make sure that the sales assistant didn’t get the impression that I was a foolish boy with a bad memory, so I would turn my jacket inside out, change my hairstyle, put on a different facial expression and speak in a lowered voice. I was a master of conspiracy.

My favorite memory of childhood is associated with my mulberry tree. At the age of 4, my parents and I decided to plant a mulberry tree. Since then, the mulberry tree grew, and now stands three storey tall. It gives really sweet fruits, and it reminds me of my childhood every time I see it.

CHILDHOOD is the best season of life. I still remember when I first went to a children's park,I met the first friend of my life.
We met each other every day,we enjoyed and played together
    and had a good time.
SOMETIMES I WISH I COULD GO BACK IN LIFE NOT TO CHANGE ANYTHING,BUT TO FEEL A FEW MOMENTS TWICE

I still remember the time we got transferred to Ranchi from Calcutta .I had left behind all my friends and a lot of memories. Doubt and fear had crept into my mind whether I would ever be able to make friends again.
We reached our new home during noon and it took the movers agency until 3 o clock to unload all our goods. By 4 o clock , as many as 15 to 16 young boys like me had gathered in the park opposite to the park of our house to play Cricket my favourite sport. Somehow I gathered some courage [which at that point of time I thought I never possessed ] and went on to the boys of my neighbourhood if I could play with them. On hearing that I was new there, they instantly agreed and let me play along with them. I stayed there for about five years before coming to New Delhi and have some of the best memories associated to my friends and the playground at Ranchi.

It is said that childhood is the time when one runs through the fields, experiencing the freedom of creating one's own winds. Some of my cherished memories include frolicking around, imitating gallant warriors from eminent backgrounds using artificial models of robust soldiers, and feeling the pleasant breeze flowing through in early Winter mornings. Being mesmerized and jubilant as I listened to the sweet melodies of chirping birds also led to me being elated, and at the same time, intrigued and fascinated.

Childhood is a time of life one can never get over with and always have a nostalgia about the time. A person atleast once in his lifetime thinks of becoming a child again. Childhood is a gift which we get as a boon.

Reminiscing nostalgically of my childhood I remember one incident which my mother told when I was 13 or so-
That one day my parylrents were out for work and my brother had got hurt and I was barely ten and I didn't know what to do so I just did my own way and just got it done and when my parents returned they were happy to see that I took care of my mother even though I had no idea what to do

My childhood memory- This is not a very old story it must be something like 5-6 years back. So, in the apartment where i live there was this senior who used to bully us(as in me and couple of my friends) so out of revenge, during holi season we mixed water soluble colour in his home's water tank.
best part of this story- he moved out last year and untill then he was unable to figure ouy that it was us who mixed the colour.

As my name suggests..I was expected to grow up calm and composed, keeping up to a proper code of conduct, learn to be disciplined and be disciplined in learning..."Life never holds on to a script",is what I suppose...Well justified by one of my acts of childhood still fresh in my memories...
It was the summer of May(which we then perceived as synonymous to vacation). Away from the hum-drum of city life...the hills and valleys of my mother's hometown awaited our presence. As we reached there, there began a cycle of mischievous acts with my cousins which very well emblazoned our childhood and made the code of conduct slip through the cracks of time...Selecting one event would be choosy..but..for the sake of attendance..I recall that once we were playing hide and seek (the game which had the greatest might to catch our fantasies then..). I hid myself in one corner of the old kitchen which was converted to a store room...2 hours passed by..no one caught me..and feeling that I am the flagbearer of this great victory..was made a good fool when I deciphered the fact that uncle had taken them to a movie...
